10 Point Book Review: The Tipping Point

April 22, 2007

I have decided to add a segment to this blog. Book and movie reviews by yours truly. Basically I will provide you the 411 and how my opinion on it.

  1. People who are interested in product/brand promotions (marketing) try reading this book.
  2. That is if they have known the 101 for marketing.
  3. The book seeks to explain how social epidemics occur like major fads.
  4. Some explanations to the epidemics like the fall in New York crime in the 1990s are controversial.
  5. Main points of the books are Law of Few, Law of Stickiness, The Power of Context, The Law of 150.
  6. Law of Few talks about people who have disproportionate influence over the spread of social phenomena, and without their aid, such dissemination is unlikely ever to occur. They are your socialable Connectors, knowledgeable Mavens and charismatic Salesmen.
  7. Law of Stickiness: Ideas or products found interesting/attractive by others will grow popular over time.
  8. The Power of Context tells us that human behavior is strongly influenced by external factors such as environment.
  9. Law of 150: According to Dunbar’s effect, an individual can only have up to 150 genuine relationships. Hence it is advisible that it’s the max number for a group, otherwise the group should split up.
  10. Honestly, the best way of reading this book is to question how valid the reasonings are.
